Festival of Trees for Crittenton Centers

As many of you know from FB postings or my "out of office" response - I spent all of last week working on the Crittenton Centers Festival of Trees event. This is my third and final year chairing this amazing event and, I'm thrilled to say, it was the best year yet! The word is getting out about this fun, family-friendly kick-off to the holiday season and we had record attendance, the biggest Jingle & Mingle (the kick-off party) we've ever had, more goodies in the Gift Shop, more trees, and just bigger and better EVERYTHING!

Festival of Trees is an event that happens in a lot of communities - Bloomington has a huge one and they were a huge help to us our first year as we were getting established. Crittenton "inherited" the rights to this event after a group of community volunteers, who had done it for a few years, were ready to hand it over to an organization. That's about the same time I came on to the Board of Directors of Crittenton and jumped in!

While I could go on and on about how much I love this event and love Crittenton - people hear that from me all the time! I wanted to dedicate this blog post to my vendor friends who came together to help make this event happen! I'm very blessed to have so many vendor friends and I try to be careful not to call in too many favors...so I reserve my favors for this event and for the American Cancer Society Annual Night of Hope (February 17th - save the date!) In this industry, we're blessed to form personal and professional bonds and I can't tell you how much they make a difference when it comes to producing events for causes that are near and dear to your heart!

So....a huge thank you goes out to:

Peoria Flag & Decorating – gosh, where do I start with Brian and his crew? I work with them for all of our bridal shows and, in our very first year of FOT, he generously came on board to help transform Expo Gardens. With pipe and drape throughout the ENTIRE youth building (and it’s a biiiig building) and it really gives us a clean slate to work with. People are always amazed at how different the building looks from when they’re there for the fair, Beer Fest, etc.

Haddad’s Downtown – I always love making new friends and Andrew and Rita of Haddad’s Downtown are two GREAT new friends! I’ve met them through Behind Every Bride and they are so sweet and wonderful. They catered our Jingle & Mingle event with lots of finger foods and, my favorite, their HUMMUS! I cannot get enough of that stuff! Andrew and Rita are new in the catering business but not new to the food business and it shows in their amazing food and their attention to detail. They’re awesome! (And now I want hummus for lunch…)

Prospect Sound & Lighting – Prospect came in this year and just knocked it out of the park! With lighting all around and a huuuuge projector and screen so we could tell our Crittenton story – it looked awesome and they were a huge blessing in what we were doing! They were even so great to change the lighting for us so we could have a different feel from Jingle & Mingle to then being open to the public. Chris, Tammy and Joe at Prospect are all so great to work with – I don’t have enough great things to say about them!

Seth Morris Photography – Oh how my dear friends are always game for anything! I put out a little Facebook plea asking for one of my photog friends to just come shoot a few images at Jingle & Mingle and they were immediately on board….as was Josh of Photo 98 (but I’m savings his talents for the American Cancer Society Gala when Seth and Mary will be enjoying their new bambino!) I can’t wait to see the great shots they got!

Packard Plaza – Oh how I love some of my venue coordinator friends – and Jessica and Kori are no exception! We were looking for a few independent bartenders for Jingle & Mingle so I called Jessica just to see if she knew anyone who might be game. Yep….she and Kori both were! Even have a crazy wedding season they had themselves and in the midst of giving Packard a facelift – they took a night away to come serve up the drinks! If you know Jessica and Kori – I’m sure you love them like I do! They make a great team and I’m always thrilled to get to go to Packard!

Sara E Designs – I don’t even know where to start with Sara. She went above and beyond in every way possible. From designing promotional flyers to invitations to Giving Tree gift tags and everything in between – she donated sooooooo much to Crittenton and we could not be more appreciative. Everything had her fun and unique “Sara E flair” and it all looked fabulous. I mean it when I say we could not have done this event without her!

Create a Scene – oh Create a Scene, how their generosity and sincerity spill over into everything they do. They provided gorgeous, mercury glass centerpieces for our Jingle & Mingle that set just the right tone for our “Winter Wonderland” themed event. Kristy and Sue are truly two of the best professionals and best people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.

I Do Events – Heather is always so great and accommodating – but especially with this event when things change at the drop of a hat! We had I Do linens throughout our gift shop and for Jingle & Mingle and the icy blue satin was perrrfect! And, when we needed a few more linens because our numbers came in higher – they were super flexible!

I hope I’m not forgetting anyone – there were so many people who made this event possible! We’re still tallying final numbers but I can tell you that they’re looking GREAT! Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone!

Warmly,
Sara O’Shea

Kim's Fairytale Wedding Recap

10.5 million viewers tuned in. Were you one of them? The hype rivaled that of the Royal Wedding. I'm not saying I agree with it, I'm just saying what it is. What wedding was it? Kim Kardashian’s, obviously.

Last night, I finished watching the 4 hours of coverage on “Kim’s Fairytale Wedding“ that was aired on E!. I won’t lie, I’m a reality TV junkie – it’s my guilty pleasure and escape from daily life. I’m not proud of it – but I can’t wait to see my DVR full of other people’s craziness! I’m a Kardashian family fan – I’ve watched all of the seasons – so I was excited to see Kim’s wedding come around. I knew it would be one for the record books. Honestly, I loved Khloe's wedding last year. I think they overplayed the "oh my gosh - it's so last minute" - and let's be honest, we all know it didn't actually happen in just 9 days. Anyway, I thought hers was beautiful so I was interested to see what Kim's had in store.

In watching it, a few things stuck out to me, not as a realty TV fan but as a wedding industry professional. I haven’t blogged much the past few months (since June 13th – I’m ashamed!) but I’ve been telling myself I need to get back into my routine…and this was just the inspiration that I needed. (Sad but true!)

So, as I watched it, I had a few “reflections” I wanted to share….some meaningful, some trivial.

Here’s a few very real lessons that all couples can learn from:

In the 4 hour special, over three and a half hours showed the planning process, only 20 minutes of it showed the actual wedding. Amazingly enough, that’s in direct proportion to how fast your wedding will actually go. Find ways to actually enjoy it and soak it in. Changing your dress 3 times probably isn’t the most effective way of maximizing your time with family and friends, but to each their own.

Family dynamics play a huge role in weddings. We saw it all –jealousy, sibling rivalry, drama, grief, love – everything. I always say that weddings and funerals bring out the best AND the worst in people. Find a way to ensure that you’re keeping your own thoughts and emotions in perspective while you plan this big day. (And, if you can’t keep them in perspective – have your lawyer on speed dial like Kris did – ha!)

As we saw multiple times, people get sucked into the planning process and easily lose sight of the big picture. Don’t get so busy planning the wedding that you forget to plan the marriage. While it made for great TV, I don’t want any of you saying at your rehearsal dinner, “We hate each other right now.” I mean, seriously.

Find ways to make it personal. For Kim K – it was the family ring bearer pillow, hearts cut out from her father’s shirt and sewn into her dress, etc. Those are the touches that will make your wedding day uniquely yours.

Finally, while every event has a “theatrical” feel to it – there’s a difference between the production of an event….and it feeling staged or inauthentic. Make sure to keep it all genuine and real.

And a few, not so deep, observations:
A bedazzled cross just feels wrong. There’s nothing holy about glitter.
Kris Humphries should not wear a mustache. Creepy. My favorite 15 seconds of the 4 hour special was when he shaved it off.
The father of the bride (or step-father as it happens) should not have diamond studs that would rival the bride.
There is such a thing as 'too much'
A wedding isn't a wedding until the mother of the bride has plastic surgery to prepare.
I’m going to guess Kris Jenner (mother of the bride for you non-obsessive readers) may or may not regret the ginormous bow on her dress.
I apparently underdress when I'm working weddings. Her wedding planner wore a skin tight, black sequin dress. I clearly need to step up my game. To my future clients – please expect the blingiest outfit I can find.

Things I loved
That her grandpa was there. I’m a sucker for grandpas.
The monomaniac color palette. Classy yet dramatic.
The wardrobe changes (even if it was over the top). The 2nd was my favorite.

Things I didn't
Her bouquet. Not sure why I didn’t care for it – I think it was the shape.
Her Headpiece. A lot of bloggers/FB’ers were asking for feedback after the wedding as to what people thought about it. I just wasn’t a fan.
The drama. Even for reality TV – there were times when it was just eye-roll-worthy.

On the off chance that someone from the Kardashian camp is reading this (because it popped up in your Google Alerts to see what people are saying) – say hello to them for me! As you can see, this wasn't a bashing blog - there were things I genuinely loved and things that I didn't. Oh and Khloe is my favorite – she’s the most “real” of them all, in my opinion. She tells it like it is and can sometimes have a filthy and inappropriate mouth…I’ve been compared to her, which I don’t mind at all. And tell Rob I said hi. ;)

How’s that for one of the most random blogs I’ve ever written?

5 Things About.....Photographers

Of all the vendor friends I have, a good chunk of them are photographers! That's for a few reasons....there are a TON of great choices (don't even get a photog started on that topic!) and they're the vendor I get to spend the most time with on wedding day so I've formed the tighest bonds with them. It was only fitting that my next "5 Things About" post had to do with photogs. I'm sure my photog friends will disagree with a few of my "tidbits" but in my effort to give brides the most accurate advice, I tried to be as honest as I could be!

5 Things About...Photographers

1. It’s so true, when it’s all said and done – the only thing you have left are your photos (or your video – but we’ll get to that in another post). Really think about what value you put on those images (and I don’t just mean monetary value). How much time will you allot for them? Will you see each other before hand? What kind of light will you have depending on what time you see each other? Those are all decisions that impact what those images will look like.

2. Don’t just choose a photographer based on their work (which is obviously INCREDIBLY important) – get to know their personality. The photographer(s) will be with you 90% of your wedding day – following you around, capturing your most intimate moments. Don’t just get someone who takes great photos – get someone who you can enjoy the day with. I personally think your planner and your photographer are the two most important decisions you can make when it comes to making sure you jive with their personality!

3. They don’t always love sticking to timelines (sorry photog friends!) They like having them but, when they get in creative, shooting mode – they’d rather you start dinner 10 minutes late than lose the great light they have for just those last few shots. Just decide how important that timeline is (and decide if you want to give your planner/coordinator a heart attack or not!) And make sure you take your guests into consideration too - if they've already been at a 2 hour "cocktail hour" - it's time to get in and get the show on the road!

4. Do engagement pictures. I know some people opt to skip them because they don’t know what they’d actually do with those pictures….but DO THEM! It’s more of an opportunity for you to bond with your photographer and for them to see your dynamic than it is those pictures (they just happen to be a nice bonus!) This helps make the wedding day easier because the photographer has gotten comfortable with you, your insecurities, your god angles, etc.

5. Fill your photog in on any family dynamics or unusual situations(divorced parents, estranged aunt that you don’t want in the family photo, a rowdy nephew, sister's boyfriend that you don't think will be around for long, etc). They run that photo session and the more info you give them – the easier it is for it to be fast, efficient and, most importantly, comfortable for everyone.

5 Things About....Planners

I'm starting a new little blog series. It's called "5 Things About...." and then some vendor category. I have ones written on planners, photographers, florists, rental companies, dj's, venues, and on and on. I tried to take a snipit of the advice that I share with clients and put it into a concise (okay, sometimes they're not so concise - I tend to be a bit wordy) blog post for you to have a little more knowledge when you're working with or hiring these vendors. This certainly isn't everything you need to know about these vendors - every vendor is unique and has their own set of strengths/challenges - but we thought we'd share what we feel are some valuable thoughts. I'll try to post at least one every few days. If there's something you'd like us to blog about - just let us know! I have no shortage of opinions! :)

I thought I'd start with planners, it's only fair!

1.	Most of us tend to have entirely too much energy for one person. Don’t be overwhelmed by our enthusiasm – trust me – you’ll need that energy and enthusiasm to carry you throughout the process when you're getting tired and stress and saying "I just want the day to get here!"

2.	Check references. Anyone can say they’re great – not everyone is. And don’t just let the planner give you people to call – ask for their 3 most recent clients and/or 3 of the most recent vendors from a previous wedding. Of course we’d give you the ones who loved us most – asking for our most recent clients gives you the most accurate picture.

3.	Don’t be alarmed by our massive (i.e. large rolling suitcase) that arrives on wedding day. We call it an emergency kit and you’d be amazed by how many items in it we use throughout the day – things you never would have dreamed of having on hand! We certainly don’t wish for any “real” emergencies so to speak but, trust us, when a groomsmen forgets black socks….it’ll feel like an emergency and we’ll be able to fix it!

4.	Of course we have strong vendor relationships and we have vendors that we like working with more than others. That being said, a planner is meant to be YOUR advocate and should connect you with the best vendors for your wedding day – regardless of their “favorites.” I won’t lie – it’s sometimes hard to do – but you’re the one hiring us and we should do what’s best for you at all times. We’ll do our best to match you based on personality, price point, and style….those are the only factors that matter when matching you with a vendor…not our personal relationships.

5.	Planners approach events from one of two angles – logistically or creatively. Most planners can absolutely manage both aspects but they’re going to have a tendency to lean towards one or the other – we all have our comfort zones. Think about what your priorities are in hiring a planner and who can best manage those for you.

Wedding Recap: Megan & Brett

May 21, 2011
Megan and Brett Rumpel
By Elizabeth, Associate Planner

Saturday was such a beautiful day!!! The sky was blue, there was a nice breeze, and one of the sweetest girls I have ever met married her best friend. It was an honor to be a part of Brett and Megan’s wedding day.

couple

The ceremony took place at Sacred Heart Church in Downtown Peoria. It is an absolutely beautiful church inside and out. During the ceremony Megan’s mother, Michelle, sang several songs making it that much more personal and special for friends and family in attendance. Megan told me after the ceremony the reason she was giggling during the exchange of the rings was because Brett kept trying to put her ring on her right hand. Maybe we should start practicing this part during the rehearsal as well!
Before heading down to the Packard Plaza for dinner and dancing, the wedding party made a quick stop out front for a very special kiss!! What a perfect picture!!
trolley

There were so many adorable personal touches to this wedding. From the slideshow the couple put together giving us a glimpse into their lives together over the past six years, to the custom made cake topper of Megan and Brett about to snowboard down the wedding cake. These personal touches are what make weddings so memorable. What was most memorable for me was the surprise 65th wedding anniversary cake Megan and Brett presented to Megan’s grandparents. The cake was presented after the anniversary dance when Megan and Brett and her grandparents were the only two couples left on the dance floor. It was perfect!
Congratulations to the newlyweds!

A special thanks to Cindy Shultz of Shelby Studios for providing all of the beautiful pictures.

We Love Our Vendors!

I’ve just been doing some reflecting on how far So Chic has come in such a short amount of time, the relationships we’ve made, the beauty we’ve witnessed, and the pure love and joy we’ve experienced. We also got to thinking about how much talent goes into each event we create! Being an event planning company, we have the opportunity to work with all sorts of amazing businesses in the area! Every weekend, our team changes and it’s so great to be working with new faces all the time. Of course, we also love it when we get to work with some of our friends in the industry. Every event we do has a pure team approach – we can’t do what we do without the talent of the other vendors. We sometimes get all the credit for a great event but we know, without a doubt, that we could not do what we do without the teamwork of all the other businesses!

So, in an effort to show that we love to work with all vendors – I looked through our client files JUST from 2010 – this doesn’t include our 2008 or 2009 clients – these are just from the calendar year of 2010 and we counted that we worked with over 50 different businesses! And we only listed some of the major vendor categories so I know we’re missing some!

Because inserting links would take for-e-ver, I just put a laundry list below. Each and every vendor has their own unique sets of strengths that they bring to the industry. If you’re ever looking for feedback while selecting your vendors – don’t hesitate to let us know! I bet you didn’t know – but we even offer a “Coffee with the Consultant” package which is just 3 coffee dates throughout your planning process where we can offer vendor guidance, etiquette advice, design ideas, or whatever you need! Might as well take advantage of our relationships!
I admit – this is a bit of a random blog. It’s kind of/sort of/not really a recap of our 2010 wedding season. It might be/but not really a response to being accused of playing “favorites” amongst vendors. It very well could be/extremely likely a side effect of my cold meds. Ha!

Like I said, I KNOW I’m forgetting some but this is a pretty darn good list. We’re lucky to have so much talent floating around the area!

Free Invites? Not so much.

I was JUST having this conversation with someone yesterday and talking about this blog I wrote over a year ago...I thought the advice was worth repeating so I've re-posted it! Funny how what I wrote a year ago about feeling down and out, tired of the cold weather, and craving weddings applies just the same now as it did last January. Oh wedding season - can't wait to see you!

Okay, so I've been feeling a little "blah" lately. I think it's a combination of the cold weather (which has resulted in me falling on the ice twice!), the dreary old days with no sunshine and the fact that I have a break in weddings for a little while due to the off season (and you don't understand - my brain, body, and spirit CRAVE weddings so when I have to go an extended amount of time without one - it dampens my spirits). So, needless to say - being down and out has made me a bit of a complainer lately. I don't mean to be - it just sort of happens.

So, I've decided rather than being a Debbie Downer - I would channel my "grumpiness" into helpful blogs. No, no - you aren't going to get a blog of me complaining....a blog of me getting on my soapbox about random issues. I got on this soapbox last night while having dinner with a friend so that's what sparked the idea. And I've had this conversation with a million brides lately so I thought I'd share.

I've decided the first one shall be "free invitations" offers from bridal stores or tuxedo shops. Don't get me wrong - it's a nice offer....in theory. Not in practice.

These stores offer free invites as a way to make you think you're getting an extra deal or an added incentive to get your dress or tuxedo in that place. Rest assured - it's not an incentive. I worked in a bridal store for a few years so I KNOW, without a doubt, it's not a good deal. They offer "free invitations" so you go in, get excited, and start looking through the books. Only to find that the vast majority of the invites are straight from the 80s. They're either super simple (i.e. white or ecru cardstock with text on it) or they're a "special" design (i.e. the headless bride and groom, Precious moments, Cinderella, or the always charming and overdone double-heart design). So, not only are your choices limited and often times, super lame - but they're not actually free.

Here's the deal - there's a 50% mark-up in those books. You may be getting free invitations...but you have to pay for your RSVP card, your reception card, your return address on the envelope, colored ink, so on and so forth. By the time you're done buying all of those things to accompany your "free" invitations"...you've spent what the bridal store/tuxedo shop is actually spending.

On top of them not being free - the people that work in the stores receive little to no training on ordering invitations so it's not all that rare that a) they don't know what they're talking about or b) you receive you invitations with a mistake on them. Who needs that headache or irritation?

So, that's the deal - they're not free. If you take the money you spend on those "free invitations" - you could put them towards much prettier DIY invitations or order actual invitations from a company or dealer and save yourself the headache.

Disclaimer: This blog wasn't meant to offend any bridal stores or tuxedo shops. It's also not meant to offend anyone who loves the 80s designs or the headless bride and groom. It is simply to serve as an honest opinion from someone who knows the industry, knows the offer, and knows that it's not worth it.

Perfection vs. Letting Go

After being cooped up in the house all week, I finally escaped last night and saw the movie "Black Swan." While I didn't love the movie (and I expected it to be awesome after all of the hype I saw on Facebook...but I just thought it was weird and kind of trippy) - there were a few parts that I thought were pretty good...there was mainly one line in the movie that caught my attention. If you've followed my blog for long, you know that sometimes random things get stuck in my head and I have a hard time letting go of them - they're often movie quotes that no one else would think twice about. In "Black Swan," the director says to Natalie Portman (the fragile ballerina) - "Perfection isn't control. It's about letting go." Not sure if that's verbatim but it's pretty close to what he said.

That quote really struck a nerve with me on two different levels - personally and professionally. It hit me personally because it was one of my personal goals in 2011 to let go of some of the nonsense and drama in my life. Inevitably, some of it just comes with life - but some of it I can make a choice to avoid. I have days where I'm really good at avoiding it and I have days where I'm not.

It also struck me professionally. How often do we get stuck on the idea of perfection? Not just on wedding days but in our daily lives. On our clothing and how we present ourselves, on the words we choose or the relationships we have. We (especially women) tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be perfect...or to at least pretend to be. And, ya know what that gets us? A whole lot of nothing. Well, it gets us a lot of heartache. It gives us a lot of insincere relationships. I often get on my soapbox on how hard it would be to pretend to be perfect all the time. I know because I used to be like that. I would hide absolutely everything and would work so hard to be the perfect version of myself. And I realized that there's no such thing. So, I've probably gone to the "dark side" - where I don't pretend to be perfect. I call a spade a spade and I don't censor myself very often. I own up to my flaws and I state my opinion. It's intimidating to some. It's refreshing to others. I have to say, my relationships have completely changed (for the better) since I stripped away the mask of perfection and started being REAL.

If we could all learn to let loose and not try to control every element in our lives, perhaps then actual perfection would follow?

I suppose this all got a little "deep" for an event planning blog. I guess I was having a bit of a Carrie Bradshaw moment. Or maybe it's because I've gotten hooked on the show "Californication" where David Duchovny plays a writer. I've always wanted to be a writer - probably the very reason that these blogs sometimes blur the line from idea sharing to thought sharing.

Stepping off my soapbox now....
